I said to myself: first I will write poems. Then: we need images with the poems. I started with self-portraits, then I continued to other women.
Miss.Tic, born on February 20, 1956, in Montmartre, Paris, was a pioneering French poet and visual artist, renowned for her stenciled street art that graced the walls of Paris for decades. She passed away on May 22, 2022, but her work, once considered rebellious and illegal, has since gained international recognition and is now featured in major institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Fonds Municipal d'Art Contemporain in Paris. Miss.Tic’s work has been celebrated in a retrospective exhibition in Singapore, supported by the French Embassy, further solidifying her legacy.
In the 1980s, amid the rise of urban art, Miss.Tic transformed the streets of Paris into her artistic canvas, particularly in the Butte aux Cailles neighborhood (13th arrondissement). Her public art debut took place in 1986 at Agnès b’s Galerie du Jour, where her unique stencils began to take shape. Influenced by her background in graphic design and theatre set design, Miss.Tic's art began to reflect her interest in the eternal feminine and the dynamics of power, often featuring striking female figures paired with thought-provoking slogans.
The 1990s brought both challenges and recognition for Miss.Tic. The rise of street art and tagging culture led to police confrontations, including a notable arrest in 1997 after a work in the Marais district. Despite facing repression, Miss.Tic’s bold art gained acceptance in prestigious institutions and collaborated with major fashion brands like Longchamp, Kenzo, and Louis Vuitton, elevating her status in the contemporary art world.
Miss.Tic’s work blends playful, provocative imagery with serious political messages. Her art questions societal norms, using language as both a tool of rebellion and a means to interpret the world. With a keen focus on feminist themes, her work is a powerful commentary on gender, identity, and resistance.
