Lithograph 4 colors printed with Marinoni press lithographic and hand cut. Paper BFK Rives 250 g. "This artwork is the logical continuation of 50 years of collisions, accidents, and encounters in my work, between history, art history, poetry, my passion for music, and this perpetual game of words which inhabits me. In this artwork, you can see the three primary colors, which I have never deviated from, for 40 years. This choice of colors came from my passion for stained-glass windows, coats of arms, flags, and the rainbow. You can notice the beauty and the depth of the black, the intensity of the red, synonym of passion, this intense solar yellow, almost burning us and this window of blue. The whole thing speaking of a "monde riant" (laughing world) since I am a great optimist and that I always speak about hope. Under many circumstances in my life, I have appropriated the codes, the works, the colors, the signs and the symbols, which I then transformed. This is what happens through this lithograph. It is a step in my life because I always have been passionate about the details and I realized with this lithograph that I am going towards abstraction." - Jean-Charles De Castelbajac

Jean-Charles De Castelbajac, Un monde riant

Presentation

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, born November 28, 1949 in Casablanca (Morocco), is a French fashion designer descended from a former noble family of Bigorre, but also a costume designer, designer, author and collector.

After various experiences in ready-to-wear in the 1970s, he founded the company bearing his brand at the dawn of the 1980s and became known to the public by his innovative approach filled with recycling and references to childhood. or art, all in a very colorful atmosphere. In a mixture of genres with his activity as a stylist for his shops, he dresses throughout his career many artists, as well as media personalities; these personalities, like Farah Fawcett, Vanessa Paradis or Lady Gaga, will give him significant visibility by wearing some of his most emblematic creations, sometimes dressed in teddy bears or frogs. From the same generation of creation as Thierry Mugler, Claude Montana, Jean Paul Gaultier or Kenzo Takada, in the 1980s he was one of those “young designers” who renewed the fashion of the time, refusing the conformism of the traditional high fashion; haute couture that he finally approached once in the 2000s.

Throughout his career, having a taste for meetings, he knows how to surround himself with contemporary artists who participate in his creations, and has collaborated for decades with many different brands in the field of clothing, consumption, or furniture. After a short stint with André Courrèges with whom he is sometimes compared, he creates liturgical clothes for World Youth Days. In the mid-2000s, it was exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum as well as at the Musée de la mode de Paris. Knight of the Legion of Honor, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is also a Commander of Arts and Letters.

In 2014, he was nominated for the Globes de Cristal in the Best Fashion Designer category.
